Understanding Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). There are three main types of bipolar disorder: bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymic disorder.
Bipolar I
Bipolar I is defined by manic episodes that last at least seven days or by manic symptoms that are so severe that the person needs immediate care. Depressive episodes also occur, typically lasting at least two weeks.
Bipolar II
Bipolar II disorder is not a milder form of bipolar I disorder but a separate diagnosis. It is characterized by less intense hypomanic episodes and depressive episodes. While the acute manic episodes of bipolar I disorder can be severe and dangerous, individuals with bipolar II disorder can be depressed for longer periods, which can cause significant impairment.
Cyclothymic Disorder
Cyclothymic disorder, also known as cyclothymia, is a milder form of bipolar disorder. Individuals with this condition experience chronic fluctuating moods over at least two years. These mood fluctuations consist of hypomanic symptoms and depressive symptoms.
Managing bipolar disorder in the long term requires a conscious effort to recognize and manage the different phases of the condition. Outpatient support from Rockland Recovery Behavioral Health can help.

Our Approach to Bipolar Disorder Treatment in Massachusetts
Rockland Recovery Behavioral Health’s comprehensive treatment program is personalized to each individual’s needs. It includes trauma-informed therapy, gender-specific group programming, and several evidence-based therapies.
Trauma-Informed Therapy
Many people with bipolar disorder have experienced trauma in their lives. Our trauma-informed approach acknowledges and addresses these experiences to help individuals heal and move forward.
Gender-Specific Group Programming
We understand that gender can influence how mental health conditions manifest and are experienced. Our gender-specific groups provide structured, supportive spaces for individuals to explore these issues among peers who understand their unique challenges.
Our gender-specific tracks offer support for those who feel more comfortable in those settings. We are inclusive of people of all identities, however, and are ready to provide bipolar disorder treatment for those in need.
Evidence-Based Therapies
Our treatment program utilizes several evidence-based therapies, including:
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a form of talk therapy that helps individuals identify and change negative patterns of thinking and behavior. It has been shown to be effective in treating various mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and addiction.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a structured therapy that combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices. It is particularly effective for individuals struggling with severe emotional dysregulation, borderline personality disorder, and chronic suicidal ideation.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them. By committing to actions that align with their values, people can achieve a greater sense of well-being and psychological flexibility.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
IFS focuses on understanding and harmonizing the various ‘parts’ or sub-personalities within an individual’s mind. It is effective in addressing trauma, internal conflicts, and improving self-awareness and self-compassion.
Narrative Therapy
Narrative therapy is a collaborative approach that helps individuals separate themselves from their problems by rewriting their personal stories. This method empowers people to reshape their identities and foster positive change by focusing on their strengths and values.
